Short answer

Start with a small job you know well, such as making a garden checklist or drafting a card. Ask in the same words you would use with a helpful person. You can ask for shorter sentences and explain what you want changed.

Before you start

Pick a topic where you can judge whether the answer is useful. A hobby or an everyday list works well. You do not need a perfect question, a special command, or computer skills beyond typing a message.

1. Open the chat

Visit chatgpt.com in your browser and follow any sign-in steps shown there. Find the box for your message. Its wording or position may change.

2. Type one small request

Say what help you want and ask for short lines. You can use the sample below or choose a simple task of your own.

3. Read at your own pace

Send the message and read the reply. It is fine to stop at one idea. If a word is unfamiliar, ask what it means.

4. Ask for a change

In the same chat, type what you want changed. You do not need to start over. Ask for fewer ideas, simpler words, or a different example.

What the screen might look like

Example screen, described in words: your request is shown in a chat, and the reply asks what plant you have. A message box waits below for your answer. This is an example of a back-and-forth chat, not a fixed app layout.

You can speak instead of typing

ChatGPT Voice lets you speak a question and hear a reply on supported web and mobile apps. Look for the Voice control if it is available. Options and limits depend on your account and app. You can still use the typed example below.

A simple example

Copy this request into the chat. Replace the words in [brackets] with your own details before you send it.

You might type

I am new to chat tools. Help me make a checklist for repotting a small houseplant. Use short sentences and explain any gardening word you use. Ask me what kind of plant I have before giving plant-specific advice.

What to look for

  • The tool asks for missing details rather than guessing.
  • The words are clear enough for you to follow.
  • You still check plant-specific advice with a source you trust.

Try this

Copy this prompt

Explain that again using simpler words. Give me only the next step and wait for me to say I am ready.

You have used the main skill: ask, read, and ask for a change. Try another small task when you feel ready.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to sound technicalOrdinary words are enough.
  • Assuming you get only one tryYou can correct the reply or ask again in the same chat.
  • Starting with a major decisionLearn with a small task before asking about something you will rely on.

Questions people ask

Do I need to type a long question?

No. A short request that names the task can work. Add more details if the first reply is too broad.

What if I make a typing mistake?

You can correct it in your next message. Ask the tool to check what you meant if it seems confused.

Can I ask it to slow down?

You can ask it to show one step at a time and wait for your next message.

Do I have to use every idea?

No. Choose what helps and ignore the rest. The tool does not decide for you.
