Understand the words on a medical bill or insurance letter

Written for adults 55+ and everyday beginners. No AI experience needed.

A confusing bill does not mean you have to guess. Use a short passage with private details removed to prepare better questions for the provider or insurer.

Start here

  1. Keep the original. Remove names, dates of birth, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and health details before sharing a short passage.
  2. Ask what the words mean, what is unclear, and what questions to ask.
  3. Confirm amounts, deadlines, and next steps directly with the real provider or insurer.

Three prompts you can use

Copy a prompt into your chat tool and replace the [blanks]. Check each reply before using it.

1. Make a first draft

Explain these billing words in plain English: [short passage with private details removed]. Use short sentences. Separate what the text says from what is unclear. Do not decide whether I owe an amount or give medical or legal advice.

2. Make it fit your life

Turn the unclear parts into polite questions for the provider or insurer. Ask about the reason for the charge, any deadline, and how to get a clear written explanation.

3. Check before you use it

Compare your explanation with the passage I provided. Flag anything you inferred rather than read in the text. List details I need to confirm with the sender.

Mistake most beginners make

Uploading a whole bill with private details in its header, footer, or barcode.

One last check

If you cannot safely remove private details, ask the sender to explain the letter. Do not pay, appeal, or change care based only on a chat reply.
