Prepare for a hard conversation at work
Written for people taking their next step at work. No AI experience needed.
A rough first draft can help when the words feel stuck. Keep the focus on what happened, what you need, and what you want to ask next.
Start here
- Summarize the issue using roles rather than names. Leave confidential or sensitive workplace details out.
- Choose one goal and a calm opening. Do not guess another person’s motives.
- Practice possible replies, then decide what is right for your real situation.
Three prompts you can use
Copy a prompt into your chat tool and replace the [blanks]. Check each reply before using it.
1. Make a first draft
Help me prepare a calm conversation with [person’s role] about [general issue]. Facts: [nonprivate facts]. My goal is [goal]. Suggest a short opening and one clear request. Do not guess motives or add threats.
2. Make it fit your life
Play the other person in a practice conversation. Give one possible reply at a time and wait for me. Help me stay respectful and clear without pretending you know how they will react.
3. Check before you use it
Review my wording for blame, assumptions, and vague requests. Suggest plain alternatives while keeping my goal. Mark any issue better handled through our normal workplace process.
Mistake most beginners make
Treating a suggested reply as a prediction of how a real person will respond.
One last check
Use your workplace’s support channels for serious concerns. A draft is not legal or employment advice.
